Lawrence city commissioners on Tuesday unanimously agreed to spend $12,500 as part of a first phase of a feasibility study on a project to make Lawrence more of a retirement destination.

The project has been envisioned by the city and county’s Retiree Attraction and Retention Task Force. It would involve building an “intergenerational neighborhood” that would include a not-for-profit continuing care facility, a health care clinic and other amenities.

The county also will be asked to contribute $12,500 to the feasibility study. Private partners — possibly including Kansas University Endowment and Lawrence Memorial Hospital — also would be asked to contribute to the feasibility study, which may cost about $75,000.

The first phase also would involve forming a new nonprofit corporation that could serve as an organizing force for the project.
