40 years ago: Bingo defeat casts cloud over American Legion

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 5, 1973:

A recent defeat in the Kansas Legislature of a move to put bingo legalization to a public vote was creating a sad atmosphere at the local American Legion post. Post Commander Leo Dahlem of the Dorsey-Liberty American Legion Post No. 14 in Lawrence said today that there was a “pretty strong possibility” that a proposal to close the post and sell the Legion building would be made at the group’s next regular meeting. “Due to the loss of bingo money,” Dahlem said, “we may not have the money needed to keep the doors open.” However, Bob Hays, Legion finance officer, said that he did not think that such a move was necessary. “Bingo does not make most of our revenue,” Hays said. “It helps to cover the overhead, but it may not be as critical as some think.” He added that the Legion was working on alternatives, trying to cut costs and possibly raising dues.
