- April 5 was set to be the starting date for a construction project that would add 317,000 square feet to the existing 17-year-old K mart Distribution Center at 2400 Kresge Road. Manager Michael Virgilio said that the new space would be used to expand the center's existing operations, which consisted of warehousing and supplying merchandise to 225 K mart stores in 12 states. Upon completion of the project, the Lawrence distribution center would have about 1,217,000 square feet of space.
- In Topeka, Gov. Mike Hayden today proposed that the Legislature ban the use of all tobacco products in Kansas elementary and secondary public schools. The governor said in a statement that there was currently a "mixed message" being presented to Kansas youth about the use of such products, with schools teaching them that they are harmful to their health and yet permitting their use by teachers and students in school buildings.
