40 years ago: KU student killed in first traffic fatality of 1973

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 1, 1973:

A Kansas University freshman from Coffeyville had died in a motorcycle crash on the previous afternoon. Paul Funk, 18, had been riding a motorcycle in the southbound lane of Iowa at 23rd when he collided with a pickup truck which had been attempting a left turn. Funk had suffered a fractured skull in spite of the fact that he was wearing a helmet, and he had been pronounced dead on arrival at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. It was the first traffic fatality this year in Douglas County, and the first since June 1970 which had involved a motorcycle. Included in the list of survivors was his wife Jane, to whom he had been married on Dec. 24. Friends of the family were planning to set up a scholarship in medicine as a memorial to the young man, who had been a pre-med student at KU.
