A 27-year-old Lawrence man died early Saturday morning after a two-vehicle accident just south of Newton.

Jeffery R. Ely, 27, died after his 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe, which was stopped northbound in the right lane of Interstate 135, was struck in the rear by a 2001 Freightliner Semi, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash log.

The driver of the semi-trailer, a 38-year-old Mississippi man named Michael A. Harbin, was not injured in the accident, which occurred at 2:09 a.m. about two and a half miles south of Newton.

According to the crash log, Ely was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at 4:53 a.m.
