40 years ago: Lawrence house damaged in Christmas Day fire

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 25, 1973:

Acting Fire Captain Otis Clemmons’ hopes for a peaceful Christmas Day were dashed when an unoccupied house at 319 E. Seventh was damaged by a fire today. Lawrence firefighters were investigating the cause of the blaze, which had been reported at 5:28 p.m. in the three-story frame home. The fire, which caused an estimated $15,000 damage, had apparently started on or near the roof and had been reported by a policeman on routine patrol. The entire third-floor floor had been burning or smoldering when fire trucks had arrived, and firefighters had worked in near-freezing weather for about five hours to extinguish the blaze, returning to the house at midnight and 2:30 a.m. to check for possible rekindling. The property was owned by Lance W. Burr, who said he had been renovating the house and that it was heated by a furnace in the basement. An investigation into the cause of the fire was initiated on the following day.
