40 years ago: Traveling Kansas couple recovers money left in car

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 24, 1973:

A couple from Paola, Kansas, had a close call this week after nearly losing a large amount of cash. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Workman had been in the Warrensburg, Mo., area when they had encountered car trouble on Highway 50. A passing motorist had picked them up and taken them to their motel in Warrensburg. Only after the man had driven away did the Workman couple realize that they had left an overnight bag containing $1,200 in the stranger’s car. On the following morning, the stranger, Ray West of Sedalia, had entered the office of the sheriff of Andrew County and asked for help in seeing that the case was returned to its owners. Authorities said the man had not opened the case and did not know its contents. The Workmans, with a great feeling of relief, were planning to drive to Savannah, Mo., to recover the cash.
