25 years ago: KU art museum receives historically large gift

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 19, 1988:

Three sons of the late Charles and Mary Margaret Clevenger of Topeka today donated $500,000 to finance art acquisitions at the Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art at Kansas University. Museum director Andrea Norris said it was unusual for a university museum to receive such a large donation. “Except for Helen Foresman Spencer’s gift, this is the largest gift the Spencer has ever received,” she said. “The Clevengers are supporting our area of highest priority — development of the collection — and we are thrilled with the generous support.” Norris said the gift would help the museum meet requirements for a $200,000 challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
