A local manufacturer has been cited for several violations after federal inspectors say they identified numerous health and safety risks at its plant in East Lawrence.

Grandstand Sportswear and Glassware, a custom glassware and apparel manufacturer located at 3840 Greenway Circle, was cited this week by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration for 27 violations, mainly for hazards associated with lead and other harmful chemicals. The company employs 95 people at its plant at 3840 Greenway Circle.

During a health inspection earlier this year, OSHA officials took wipe and air samples and detected lead, inorganic arsenic and cadmium that employees were exposed to, leading to 21 health violations. In announcing the violations Wednesday, OSHA noted that Grandstand’s “failure to implement basic safety procedures” to monitor and prevent employee exposure to the contaminants “led to serious health risks.”

After noticing safety risks during the first inspection, OSHA officials returned for a separate investigation a few months later, and issued six safety violations for machinery and electrical hazards.

Grandstand president Chris Piper said the issues, besides ones that the company objects to, have been addressed since the inspections. Grandstand has set up a conference for January to discuss the violations with OSHA.

“It basically all revolves around one of the inks we use,” Piper said, as well as “cleanup procedures we needed to put in place.”

Fines for failing to correct the violations could total $119,000. OSHA conducted the inspections after getting a referral from a local health department.
