Man taken to hospital after driving into oncoming traffic

An unidentified elderly man was in critical condition Monday after he drove into oncoming traffic on Sixth Street in Lawrence and struck another vehicle.

Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesperson, said police think a medical problem preceded the crash. The two occupants of the second vehicle did not require hospitalization. Damage to both vehicles was “moderate,” McKinley said.

According to McKinley, first responders performed CPR on the elderly man at the scene and on Monday evening he was still being treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. McKinley did not have the man’s name on Monday.

The crash occurred at about 1:15 p.m. near the intersection of Sixth and Missouri streets. McKinley said the man, driving eastbound, crossed the center line and the westbound car then attempted to move to the right to avoid a collision.
