25 years ago: Second high school would be most expensive option

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 9, 1988:

The discussions were continuing on the best solution for secondary school overcrowding in Lawrence. School board members learned this week that the most expensive option would be the proposal to build and operate a second high school, which would cost about $500,000 more each year than a mid-high school/senior high school arrangement. The building of a second school might also affect course availability, with about 20 to 25 courses, many of them vocational, in line to be cut if then-current minimum enrollment requirements were applied. After their third study session on the matter, the four board members who had not yet taken a position on the issue were still remaining neutral. The final decision was expected to come in January, after more than a year of study that had begun with the recommendations of the Secondary Schools Facilities Task Force, which had come out in favor of the mid-high/senior high option.
