Leadership Lawrence to “party with purpose”

For members of the Leadership Lawrence class of 2014, a holiday party should be a lot more than just hot cocoa and ugly Christmas sweaters. It should be about the giving spirit of the season.

The group is hosting a “Party with a Purpose” at 1 p.m. Dec. 15 to raise more than $7,000 to “adopt” 100 low-income families for the holidays through Lawrence Holiday Bureau, a coalition of local non-profits.

Party-goers donate $35 and are placed on a 10-member team whose members will pool their donations to shop for clothing, shoes and a gift for each member of their an assigned family.

Leadership Lawrence member Amy Gilliland said Party with a Purpose makes it easier for those who want to help but can’t sponsor an entire family on their own.

“It can seem intimidating, it may be too much for people to adopt a whole family,” Gilliland said, “but one $35 donation combined with 200 others can do something really big.”

After the shopping spree, the teams will regroup at Fatso’s to begin the cheery festivities: wrapping the gifts and enjoying food, drinks and the Kansas City Chiefs game.
