40 years ago: Prisoner sets small fire in county jail

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 5, 1973:

  • Aggravated arson charges were being prepared against a prisoner who had set fire to papers in the Douglas County Jail. Kenneth Ray Childers, 26, of Sacramento, California, had been in custody on kidnapping and robbery charges when he ignited papers and magazines in walkways around the cell block where he was confined. Firefighters estimated damage at $100, mostly caused by smoke. Childers had been charged with a July 19 robbery at the Jayhawk Motel, 1004 N. Third, and kidnapping of a driver after the robbery.
  • In Washington, House Minority Leader Gerald Ford’s nomination as vice president was endorsed enthusiastically in the House today. Partisanship took a back seat as both Republicans and Democrats praised the nominations during today’s debates; one Democrat, Rep. Clarence L. Long of Maryland, urged House Republicans to move for impeachment against President Nixon so that Ford could be elevated to the presidency. Long also noted with some sarcasm that if Nixon remained in office for three more years, the Democrats could win the White House in 1976 “with the Boston Strangler” as a candidate.
