40 years ago: Lawrence gas stations adjusting to fuel shortage

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 4, 1973:

  • “Sorry, no gas” signs were beginning to appear at some Lawrence service stations this week. Most stations continued to have adequate supplies and were dealing with gas shortages by adjusting their hours of operation, but several sites had posted the apologetic signs until their later allotments came in, causing motorists to have to drive to a different station for fuel. In Washington, the chief of federal energy programs told senators this week that gasoline would not be rationed before March 1.
  • Tenure status was the subject of some remarks this week by Kansas University Chancellor Archie Dykes. Peer evaluation of teaching should not outweigh student evaluation in considering a KU faculty member’s qualifications for tenure, Dykes said.
