Springfield, Mo. ? Kansas University junior Kelsey Lyden scored her first career goal in the 87th minute as the Jayhawks edged Missouri State, 1-0, Friday at the Plaster Sports Complex.

Fellow junior Jamie Fletcher notched her first assist of the season on Lyden’s goal and led the team with four shots on the night.

“Missouri State had a good game plan for us, and I don’t think we solved it very well today,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “We’ve got to be better soccer players and solve the equation better. The good news is we grinded it out. We didn’t play particularly well today but we still found a way to win. That’s the satisfying part we’ll take away from tonight.”

KU improved to 2-1, while the Bears fell to 0-3.

In the 87th minute, Fletcher was able to corral a loose ball 10 yards from the MSU goal and played a pass to Lyden, who was streaking through the left side of the box.

Lyden put one touch on the ball and got a right-footed strike off that sneaked inside the right goal post, giving KU the lead with less than three minutes to play.

After waiting 21 starts to pick up her first career shutout last week against Pacific, goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud notched her second consecutive shutout after a relatively easy night between the posts. The junior did manage to make a key save however in the 62nd minute, her only stop on the night.

The Jayhawks will host Purdue at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
