From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 30, 1988:

• The Lawrence Association of Neighborhoods and the Lawrence Motor Carriers Association had reached agreement on a voluntary program to ease traffic problems caused by trucks not following designated routes in the city. The proposal, which had been sent in a letter to Lawrence Mayor Bob Schumm, applied only to tractor-trailers with gross weights of over 20,000 pounds. Under the agreement, neighborhood residents or groups were asked to report initial complaints to the motor carrier owning the truck. If the complaint was not resolved at that level, the second step was to to take it to the police department. The intention was for violations to be dealt with early and without the involvement of the police department.
• The movie “Kansas” was finally scheduled to be released, with a Sept. 22 date for an as-yet-unnamed Topeka theater and Sept. 23 at one of the Commonwealth theaters in Lawrence. “Kansas” had been filmed during the previous summer on location in Lawrence, Valley Falls, Edgerton, and other spots in the area. Billed as a “contemporary romantic suspense drama,” the movie starred Matt Dillon and Andrew McCarthy as fellow drifters and bank robbers.
