East Lawrence power outage affects about 1,300 residents

August 23, 2013, 11:46 a.m. Updated August 23, 2013, 6:02 p.m.

A construction-related accident caused a power outage in East Lawrence this morning that affected about 1,300 residents, including Kennedy Elementary.

About 9:45 a.m., workers operating a backhoe at the Douglas County Fairgrounds caused the outage by accidentally damaging some power equipment, said Erin La Row, a Westar Energy spokeswoman.

Kennedy classes continued as planned, but the school's phone and computer services do not work. The school district notified Kennedy parents of the outage, said Julie Boyle, a Lawrence school district spokeswoman.

At about noon, Westar had restored power to all except the school and about 280 residents, and their power was completely restored this afternoon.

It's funny when there is an outage in other parts of the city, it's reported here, even if a school is not involved. But it took a school problem to report the outage on the east side; otherwise, why report it. Just not saying thanks a lot. We would like to be informed, but we are just east of Mass, so it doesn't matter. Thankfully a school was involved.

We reported it as soon as we learned there had been an outage. In the future, feel free to give us a call with any news tips at 785-832-7144. Ian Cummings, LJW.

OH get over yourselves, people! For most of the east side (where my office is located) the outage was in effect for less than an hour. Westar got it fixed far ahead of the ETA they gave originally. Where is the outrage and the dummies at the construction company who caused this mess?

I am a parent to a child at Kennedy Elementary and I was never notified.
