Kansas University homecoming parade moves to Massachusetts Street

August 14, 2013

The Kansas University homecoming parade is moving downtown this year.

Starting at 6 p.m. on Oct. 3, the 2013 homecoming route will travel along Massachusetts Street, instead of Jayhawk Boulevard like previous years. The community is invited to watch the spirit squad, Marching Jayhawks and plenty of colorful floats make their way downtown before attending the pep rally on 8th Street between Massachusetts and New Hampshire Streets following the parade.

Thursday night parade might help downtown food and beverage stores. I generally think most parades are typically a Saturday event.

A return to the past! During the 1900's, up until sometime in the 1970's (not sure of the year), the Homecoming Parade was always held along Massachusetts Street., Before the street was converted to slot parking and with no trees, the downtown stores had their windows painted with tempera paint depicting the Jayhawks demise of their opponent (usually KSU or MU). I had a high school friend (an artist) who would outline the renderings and a couple of us non-talents would come along and fill in the colors The campus "greeks" and dorms all built floats, some elaborate for the event, usually 20-30 floats, KU band, etc. Great come-together for the Town-Gown concept.

Several things killed it off: 70's complacency, parking issues, some merchants complained, KU lost interest, cost, poor football performance, city hall issues, Chamber and some DLI merchants complained.

This year the homecoming parade also didn't check to see when the zombie walk would take place.

Depends on your point of view. I think this might be the only homecoming parade worth attending. Watch out, Baby Jay!
