Section of Iowa Street open again after closing for damaged gas line

A section of Iowa Street has been opened to traffic again after police briefly closed it this afternoon because of a damaged gas line near the intersection of Iowa Street and Oxford Lane., according to police.

Lawrence police officers closed Iowa Street from University Drive to Harvard Road about 1 p.m. today while utility crews worked on the damaged gas line, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. All of Iowa Street is open to traffic again, although a large section is still reduced to one lane in each direction because of ongoing construction.

The gas line was hit by a contractor working for the city, according to a news release from the city government. Black Hills Energy requested the traffic closing for safety while the gas line is repaired.
