Jefferson County man accidentally shot in the leg

An accidental gunshot wound to the leg sent a Jefferson County man to KU Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries on Friday, according to the Leavenworth Police Department.

Deputies with the Leavenworth Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident near K-16 Highway between McLouth and Tonganoxie just after 7 p.m. Friday.

The man, 69, leaned a loaded .22 caliber single shot rifle against his vehicle when he went to open the trunk. According to the Leavenworth Police Department, the rifle, which did not have a trigger guard, fell to the ground and discharged the bullet.

The bullet went through the man’s leg, causing minor blood loss.
