40 years ago: River search continues after tragic drownings

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 6, 1973:

It was a sad Monday morning in Lawrence as an extensive search of the Kansas River from here to Eudora continued after two children had drowned over the weekend. Tommy Boylan, 11, and companion Clayton Williams, 14, had drowned about 3:30 p.m. Saturday while swimming in the Kaw. The two children, along with Tommy’s sister Dyann, 10, had been in the river between the north bank and the island and had been warned by fishermen that they should leave the water. Shortly after this, they had been caught by an undertow; Dyann had managed to catch hold of a tree limb, but the two boys had been swept away. Dyann had been rescued by two witnesses, and another fisherman from Ottawa had tossed his fishing line toward Williams to try to pull him to shore, but the line had broken during the attempt. An extensive search for the boys had been initiated, with at least nine boats in the river and searches from the air carried out by the Lawrence Civil Air Patrol and two helicopters from Ft. Leavenworth. Dragging operations had also been carried out by units from the fire, police, and Douglas County sheriff’s departments as well as the Kansas Forestry, Fish and Game Unit. Williams’ body had been recovered just before 5:30 p.m. but the search for young Boylan’s body was still being carried out today.
