From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 3, 1988:

Results from the previous day’s primary election were front-page news today. Loren Anderson had been chosen as the Republican candidate in the Douglas County Sheriff race, winning a total of 3,893 votes, or 52 percent, to Dallas Murphy’s 3,591 votes. Anderson was now slated to face Democrat Dale Pinegar in the Nov. 8 general election. Anderson, then serving as undersheriff, credited “strong, solid support” for his victory, saying, “These people had known me forever, and knew that four or five years after I started working here that some day I wanted to be sheriff.” Commenting on the support that Anderson had also received from current sheriff Rex Johnson, Douglas County Dist. Atty. Jim Flory, and former police chief Richard Stanwix, Murphy commented that voters had “looked at the support and didn’t look at experience, training and qualifications.” In other local races, Republican Louie McElhaney had defeated incumbent Warren Rhodes and would face former county commissioner I. J. Stoneback in November, and Mike Amyx had gotten 48 percent of the votes in the three-way Democratic primary for the 2nd District county commission seat.
