40 years ago: LHS students travel to study advanced biology

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 29, 1973:

  • Lawrence High School students in advanced biology had just returned from a week-long trip to the southeastern United States. “Our purpose was to study the ecology and natural history of the southeastern of the United States with emphasis on pinewood ecology and marine biology,” said faculty sponsor Stan Roth. Specimens taken on the trip were to be displayed in the biology aquarium at the high school.
  • City commissioners had a few sign ordinance variances to consider at their upcoming meeting, including one for Straw Hat PIzza at Sixth and Crestline and another for what was referred to in the agenda as “International Pancake House” at 23rd and Iowa. An addition to the Hillcrest Shopping Center was also slated to be discussed.
  • “Watergate Pot Boils Anew,” announced a front-page headline this week. Fresh reports had emerged suggesting that the White House had tried to cover up the facts behind the wiretapping of the Democratic headquarters the previous June. Top presidential aides H. R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman were mentioned as having possibly participated in the coverup.
