25 years ago: Task force recommends second LHS building

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 27, 1988:

  • Members of the Secondary Schools Facilities Task Force this week recommended that Lawrence solve overcrowding problems with the construction of a second facility — but not a second high school. The task force had voted 12-4 for the plan of building a new school for juniors and seniors on a separate site, possibly in west Lawrence, while reserving the current Lawrence High School building at 19th and Louisiana for freshmen and sophomores. Panel members favoring that strategy cited the need to preserve community by having only one high school.
  • Lawrence municipal court officials today charged five Kansas University fraternity houses with fire code violations. Fire Marshal Rich Barr said that an annual occupancy inspection had led to the charges.
