From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 25, 1973:

• Lawrence Memorial Hospital needed to expand and improve, and it was going to cost a lot of money. That was the message at the heart of a request made by Warren Rhodes, chair of the hospital board, to the Lawrence City Commission last night. Expanded emergency and outpatient facilities, two additional floors on the north wing, and complete updating of the 1955 addition were going to come with a price tag of $6.25 million and would require a 1.75-mill hospital levy increase as well as a bond issue. Sixteen other applicants for revenue-sharing funds appeared before commissioners at their three-hour meeting, including the Bert Nash Mental Health Center (seeking $9,300 for an adolescent referral program), the Lawrence Boys’ Club ($20,000 for a guidance-oriented program), and the Douglas County Council on the Aging ($50,000 for recreational programs for the elderly). The Lawrence Housing Authority, Lawrence Public Library, Legal Aid, and three child care centers also appealed to the city for aid.
• The Elizabeth Watkins Community Museum building at 11th and Massachusetts was one of 53 Kansas sites included in the latest issue of the National Register of Historic Places. Two other Kansas places listed were Haskell Indian Junior College and Baldwin’s Old Castle Hall.
