40 years ago: New Mass Street trees survived cold, wet winter

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 22, 1973:

  • The recently-planted trees in the new Massachusetts Street planters were doing well in spite of the long, cold, wet winter. George Osborne of the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department said that no trees had to be replaced due to weather damage, but two had been replaced after damage by vandals.
  • The city commission this week was to discuss a 20-acre rezoning request for K mart Discount Stores at the southeast corner of 31st and Iowa. Also on the agenda was a report on a petition protesting a sidewalk plan for the areas bounded by 19th, 23rd, Iowa, and Louisiana.
  • A research contract was awarded to the Kansas University Center for Research Inc. by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for participation in the Skylab mission, to be launched in May. NASA had awarded $61,680 for an 18-month research program to be directed by Joe R. Eagleman, associate professor of meteorology.
