40 years ago: Local man faces charges after tavern brawl

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 21, 1973:

  • Arraignment in Douglas County Court was set for an upcoming Monday for a man arrested by Lawrence police after a disturbance at Van Vleck’s Tavern, 1830 W. Sixth. The man had been arrested and booked on two felony counts, aggravated battery and property damage, as well as five misdemeanor battery counts, after striking another tavern patron over the head with a beer pitcher. The man had also struck two bartenders and three other customers, according to the police report.
  • Frontage roads were to be constructed for part, but not all, of the planned U.S. Hwy. 59 expansion leading south from 23rd Street. Construction plans showed frontage roads from 24th to 26th Street and from 27th to 31st on the east side of Iowa, and from 27th Street to 39th Terrace and from 31st to 34th Street on the west side. Bays were to be provided at most intersections for left turns off Iowa.
