Letter: NRA sway?

To the editor:

Whatever happened to the will of the people? The U.S. Senate has just defeated the watered-down compromise bill that would have somewhat expanded background checks to gun purchases made at gun shows and via the Internet. This in spite of the fact that over 90 percent of Americans, including a significant majority of National Rifle Association members, support these checks.

As expected, Kansas Sens. Moran and Roberts voted against the amendment. I wonder what made them go against the will of so many people, including what I expect is a significant majority of Kansans? It couldn’t be the money they get from the NRA, could it? Maybe it is.

According to an article in the Daily Beast, Mr. Roberts received $5,950 in campaign contributions from the organization. Mr. Moran did even better, receiving $7,950.

I guess it takes more than 30 pieces of silver to betray someone and buy a vote these days.
