40 years ago: Tax Day coincides with heavy rainfall

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 16, 1973:

  • Tax Day had come and gone in Lawrence accompanied by a soaking of another kind when the area had experienced 1.05 inches of rain. The weekend rainfall had swelled streams to the flood-alert level, with the National Weather Service issuing high water warnings for several area streams which were expected to crest about two to three feet above bankful.
  • Tax-time appeared to be a good time to emphasize the disgust some U.S. citizens were feeling about the current system. Demonstrations this year were slated in 31 cities nationwide to urge sweeping tax reforms. Meanwhile, in Washington, the Internal Revenue Service was reporting that “fewer Americans than expected” were using the new “checkoff” system on their tax forms to contribute money to finance the next presidential election.
