Police are seeking a suspect in the robbery of a laptop computer early Sunday morning from an 80-year-old man at the Lawrence Visitor Center, 402 North Second St.

The man told police he was sitting outside the visitor center about 12:45 a.m. Sunday, using the center's free wireless Internet hotspot, when a man snatched the computer away and ran to a waiting vehicle, which sped away, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman.

The suspect was described as a white man in his 30s or 40s, between 5 feet 6 inches and 6 feet tall, with a short beard. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a blue bandana around his forehead as a sweatband. The suspect vehicle was a white passenger car that fled east on Elm Street, McKinley said.

So sad that there is apparently no shortage of scum in this town. I hope the Police find and arrest this waste of flesh.

I understand your anger, but this is just one incident, it says nothing about the quality of the others who live here. "...waste of flesh." Never heard that expression before.

Probably meant fled south "to" Elm street, which then goes east. What a coward, robbing an 80 yr old man. Are there no video cameras at the Visitor Center?

Ian_Cummings 5 years ago

Yes, that's right. The suspect apparently fled south to Elm Street, and then east, according to police. Ian Cummings, LJW.

Can you really say he robbed the laptop? Wouldn't you say he robbed the man? He stole the laptop.

Am I the only one who thinks it seems weird for someone to be sitting outside the Visitor Center at almost 1 in the morning just for free wifi? I'm not saying he was doing anything wrong, or that he in any way deserved to have his laptop stolen, but it just seems odd.

Will someone please learn the difference between robbery, burglary, and theft? Here is a hint: people are robbed, structures are burgled, and property is stolen. I know some will argue that businesses can be robbed, but that is technically incorrect.

tomatogrower 5 years ago

The Supreme Court says that businesses are now people, so it is technically correct.

There has to be several thousand somewhat older unused laptops in this town (I know I have one)...too bad there isn't an easy way to get a reasonably decent one to the victim...

the poor young guy just needed some money for drugs, cause he is a loser no one will hire. so give him a break, since it is about drugs, some lawrenceians condsider this a victimless crime . so it is ok
