25 years ago: Thousands celebrate NCAA title with downtown parade

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 14, 1988:

An estimated 60,000 fans had packed downtown on the previous afternoon to cheer for coach Larry Brown and his 1988 NCAA basketball champions as they inched down Mass Street in a celebration parade. Confetti filled the air as Disneyland’s Cinderella led the procession, followed by Jimmy Dunlap, the team’s “good-luck charm” bus driver. A group of men dressed as Dick Vitale performed mop-brigade maneuvers in honor of the sportscaster’s vow to personally mop up Allen Fieldhouse next October if Larry Brown was still coaching at KU. Team mascot and inspiration Ryan Gray waved to the crowd from his spot in the parade route, and “the fat lady,” which turned out to be Lawrence High School teacher Art Sloan, belted out the Kansas alma mater while dressed in a blonde wig, mesh robe, and Viking-style helmet.
