Local boxer Oliveira wins by TKO

? Former Haskell Indian Nations University basketball player Marcus Oliveira earned a shot at the WBA light heavyweight title by scoring an 11th-round TKO against Ryan Coyne of St. Louis on Friday night at the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, fightnews.com reported. The fight was stopped at 1:15 of the 11th round of a scheduled 12-round bout.

Oliveira was ahead decisively on all three cards through 10 rounds, 99-91 on two cards and 98-92 on the third.

“Two right hands followed by a left hook left caused Coyne to crumble to the mat in a neutral corner,” fightnews.com reported. “He righted himself, but Oliveira chased him into the ropes on the opposite side of the ring and battered Coyne for about 20 seconds, with Jay Nady watching closely, before Coyne dropped to one knee and Nady waved off the action then and there.”

The victory over the previously unbeaten Coyne means Oliveira will advance to a fight against WBA champion Beibut Shumenov of Kazakhstan.
