From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 9, 1988:

• Many Jayhawk fans were shocked and delighted this week to learn that Kansas basketball coach Larry Brown had turned down an offer to go to UCLA. Nearly everyone, including KU athletic director Bob Frederick, had thought that the UCLA move was a “done deal.” However, at a news conference in Allen Fieldhouse, Brown announced that he intended to stay at KU. The crowd at the fieldhouse, mostly students, began cheering at this point and did not cease until Brown made a time-out signal, after which he added, “I apologize at this time for these things to be coming out. I think it’s a time everybody ought to be celebrating the accomplishments of our team.”
• Members of the Kansas Legislature were wrapping up some work before adjourning, sending a school finance bill and a measure designed to help reduce prison overcrowding to Gov. Mike Hayden. Legislators were scheduled to adjourn today, the 90th calendar day of the 1988 session, returning for a short wrap-up session expected to begin April 27.
