25 years ago: Rumors flying on KU coach’s future plans

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 8, 1988:

  • Kansas University basketball coach Larry Brown was reported to be considering a return to UCLA. “I assume from everything I hear it’s a done deal, but I haven’t heard that from coach,” said KU athletic director Bob Frederick early this afternoon. “There’s really not much for me to say until I meet with him.” CBS-TV had broken the story this morning that Brown had accepted a five-year contract to return to the school he had coached from 1980 to 1982. A press conference was expected shortly.
  • It was announced today that students in Lawrence School District 497 were to be dismissed a half-hour earlier than usual for the congratulatory parade to be held downtown for the KU basketball team.
  • No injuries were reported to have resulted from two apartment fires overnight, but extensive damage had resulted from both blazes. The first had occurred at 1332 Vermont when a cigarette had apparently caught some paper on fire in the corner of one of the rooms. Approximately $13,000 in damage had been caused by that fire, officials reported. The second fire, resulting in $10,000 in damage, had happened at 1138 Indiana; its cause was still under investigation.
