From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 6, 1913:

• “Mrs. Patee has generously agreed to devote the proceeds of the Nickel to the humane society on Tuesday, April 8. The humane society is doing a great work in Lawrence and Mrs. Patee is in entire sympathy with it. She has always been a member and always its friend. The society needs money and this means has been devised to get it. The program on that occasion is assured to be an unusually good one and the patronage ought to be large. If you are in sympathy with the humane society in its work then get in line for a ticket for this benefit.”
• “Harry Weyermiller is the latest victim of the auto bug. The car is a handsome five-passenger 30-horse power Overland and arrived here yesterday.”
• “Practically all of the business section of Haviland, a small town southwest of Hutchinson, was burned today. The loss is said to be $25,000. Seven business houses were burned including the post office and hotel.”
• “There was quite a little excitement this morning on South Massachusetts street when an automobile driven by Will Hopkinson of Vinland ran into a wagon owned by Cummings Bros., also of Vinland. The automobile was going south on Massachusetts street and the wagon north, in some way Hopkinson is said to have lost control of his machine and smashed into the wagon driving it forcibly against the curbing. Luckily there was no one hurt and the damage done was limited to a broken axle on the wagon and a smashed fender and radiator on the car.”
• “The dedication of Myers Hall and celebration of the 12th anniversary of the founding of the Christian Bible Chair was held in Myers Hall of the University this morning…. The building was built almost a year and a half ago but those in control did not wish to have it dedicated until all of the money for building it had been raised.”
