40 years ago: Reunions planned for KU Commencement

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 4, 1973:

  • Plans were coming together for Kansas University’s 101st annual commencement activities in May. Among other events planned were reunions of the KU basketball team of 1923 (NCAA champions that year), the Men’s Glee Clubs of 1923 to 1928, and reunions for the classes of 1923, 1933, and 1948.
  • City commissioners had several items on the agenda for their upcoming meeting, including paving and sidewalk improvements in Deerfield Park, a request from Montgomery Ward for a variance from the sign ordinance, and a site plan for the Straw Hat Pizza Palace to be located on the southwest corner of Sixth Street and Crestline Drive.
  • Families across the nation were eating pasta, chicken, and seafood on the opening day of a week-long meat boycott protesting high prices for beef, pork, and lamb. A spot check of U.S. restaurants showed evidence of patrons ordering more meatless dishes than usual. A Journal-World survey of seven local meat markets, however, indicated only slight declines at three stores and no changes in meat sales at the remaining four.
