25 years ago: County jobless rate drops

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 30, 1987:

  • The jobless rate in Douglas County had dipped to its lowest point in years during August, and the number of people with jobs in the county was increasing, according to state figures released today. The local unemployment rate had dropped from 4.1 percent in July to 3.4 percent in August.
  • A move was afoot in Washington to replace the $1 bill with a coin, in spite of the failure of the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin which had been introduced in 1979. Coin advocates said that the change would reduce government spending, hold down vending-machine product prices, and remove hidden costs of the “outmoded” dollar bill.
