LHS 6th, FSHS 7th at league tennis

? Led by a 3-1 showing in the No. 1 singles bracket by junior Whitney Simons, Lawrence High’s girls tennis team finished sixth Thursday at the Sunflower League Invitational.

The Lions finished just ahead of rival Free State, which tied Olathe Northwest for seventh place at the league tournament. Firebirds junior Alexis Czapinski had the best finish of all city players, with a 2-1 record in No. 1 singles to place third.

LHS sophomore Kendall Pritchard finished fourth in No. 2 singles, with a 2-2 record. FSHS sophomore Megan McReynolds finished in eighth with an 0-2 record.

In the doubles brackets, the Lawrence duo of Abby Gillam and Zoe Schneider took sixth in the No. 1 bracket with a 2-2 record. Free State’s Emily Sadosky and Caitlin Dodd finished ninth in the same bracket, with a 2-1 record.

In No. 2 doubles, Taylor Hawkins and Alyssa Raye (1-3), of Free State, finished eighth, while Brooke Braman and Lily Abromeit (2-1), LHS, took ninth.

Host Shawnee Mission East won the overall points title at the league tourney.
