Bierocks, bratwurst, beer and buddies.

The annual Oktoberfest celebration at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church marks the autumn season with things meant to bring the community together — mainly lots and lots of food.

Angie Evers has helped organize the event at the church, 1234 Ky., for all of its 16 years. They always sell out of the food, she said, but this year they were running low as early as 6 p.m. There was still a line wrapped around the block to 13th Street when Evers joked that she’d be going to the store.

Volunteers prepare hundreds of pounds of German snacks in advance and then have a fundraising event with music and kids events. It’s a smaller event than the church’s annual summer fiesta but still a time, organizers say, to get community members together.

Dave Dunlop said it was the first year he’d attended the event. And what attracted him? The beer.

Cathy Dunlop, however, was there for Mass earlier in the evening. It was a fun one, she said.

“It’s a lot of people coming together for fun,” Mike Jalka, of Lawrence, said.
