A golf tournament and silent auction to benefit a charity founded in honor of a 16-year-old McLouth student killed in Costa Rica will be held Sunday at the Dub’s Dread Golf Club in Kansas City, Kan.

Remembering Justin, founded to honor Justin Johnston, who was shot and killed during a school trip to Costa Rica in 2011, is hosting the event. All proceeds will be used to support renewable $1,000 college scholarships for McLouth High School students.

Johnston was shot and killed at a hotel by a security guard, who was sentenced earlier this year to 15 years in prison for the crime.

John Johnston, Justin’s father, said the family is focusing on the charity despite their frustration about media reports of Justin’s death. Costa Rican media have reported that Justin was off hotel property and that Justin and another student were running toward the security guard when Justin was shot.

John, who travelled with his wife to Costa Rica for the trial, said that information is erroneous.

“We didn’t like the story out there,” John said. “It was very frustrating.”

John and the family contend that Justin was not off hotel property and didn’t charge toward the security guard during the shooting.
