From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 20, 1972:

In a special election this week, Lawrence voters voted to deannex 1,780 acres northwest of Lawrence. The unofficial totals showed 4,817 “For” votes (favoring deannexation) and 2,981 “Against” votes. The annexation had been upheld in only three of the city’s 16 polling places. The biggest vote had been at Pinckney School, where members of the affected area had voted. Members of the anti-annexation Riverside Committee, whose campaign slogan had been “You CAN Beat City Hall,” were jubilant, saying that their victory reflected the community’s “uncertainty surrounding the whole thing,” particularly the 10 1/2 percent surcharge that had been proposed by Kansas Power and Light Co., whose generating plant was in the disputed area.
