City offering compost for sale on two upcoming Saturdays

September 14, 2012

The first of two city of Lawrence compost sales this fall will be Saturday.

The sale on Saturday is for residents who will load compost into their truck or trailer themselves. The second sale, Sept. 29, will be for residents who would like city staff to load compost into their truck or trailer.

Both sales will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the city’s Wood Recovery and Composting Facility, 1420 E. 11th St. The Sept. 29 sale may end early if supplies run out.

The city scheduled two different sales this year to allow residents who need a smaller amount of compost to pick it up before supplies run out, according to a news release from Kathy Richardson, the city’s waste reduction and recycling operations supervisor.

Compost will cost $10 per truck or trailer load at both of the sales. Residents must pay with cash. At this Saturday’s sale, small quantities will be available for free, and residents must bring a shovel.

The compost offered comes from the city’s weekly collection of residential yard waste.

This article is somewhat confusing on the dates. So the first date (for self-loaders) is this Saturday the 15th (i.e. tomorrow)? If so, that's terribly short notice. I'm thinking it's more likely it would be the 22nd (which would mean the sales are on consecutive Saturdays), but the article never states that. It just says "Saturday" (implying this Saturday).

LJW can you edit the article please to clarify?

That said, the changes are welcome! It was always sort of ridiculous to hold a two day sale when they almost always ran out on the first day (a weekday when most residents would be at work or school). By doing two Saturdays rather than Fri-Sat a whole lot more residents will be able to take advantage. Kudos for making the change--just let us know when we can go down there!

Edit: City release (put out this past Tuesday) says the sale really is tomorrow Sept. 15th for self-loaders. LJW, it would have been helpful had you published this article before today.

Lawrence charges for compost? That stinks.

Kinda late notice for the 15th date! My experience is that the Spring compost sale is a mad-house and they quickly run out, even the first day. The Fall sale is much less crowded and usually lasts both open days.

it's been advertised in the paper for a while

The city is trying to give everyone an opportunity to get the compost. Tomorrow is ONLY self loading ($10). In the past the first day of the sale was on Friday when most people were at work. It was not uncommon in the past for the supply to be exhausted on the first day, so those that work normal hours did not have the opportunity to get compost. The new system will give everyone an opportunity to participate in the sale and if you have to load your own the first day, it is highly unlikely that they will run out on the first day.

if you want to get out of bed, and get a shovel, you can get some compost if you want to whine, let the money folks pay the guys with trucks the next weekend to haul everything off
