25 years ago: LHS band thanks Lawrence supporters with free car washes

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 13, 1987:

Lawrence High School band members, in an attempt to raise funds for a trip, had far exceeded their expectations on a recent weekend. Members had set aside two consecutive Saturdays to wash cars in return for pledges in an attempt to reach their goal of performing at the Florida-Citrus Bowl Festival in late December. Their goal for the combined Saturdays was to be 1,000 cars, but on the first Saturday alone, the group had washed 1,422 cars, according to LHS band director Vic Sisk. In addition, the band had received $950 in donations. Even though they had already attained and surpassed their goal, Sisk said, the band would wash cars for free on the following Saturday at eight Lawrence locations as a thank-you to the community for the overwhelming support.
