Pool questions

September 10, 2012

To the editor:

I would like to question Mr. Vance’s comments (Public Forum, Sept. 5) that the lack of lifeguards after the start of school is the reason for closing the pool prior to Labor Day.

Several days before the start of Labor Day weekend, I attended a private swimming party at the Outdoor Aquatic Center from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The facility was fully staffed with lifeguards as well as on-site supervisory personnel. It seems reasonable to think that the same staff could have been available two days later to work the Labor Day weekend.

Was the pool area staffed with lifeguards and personnel for the “Pooch Plunge”? How much in pool admission fees did we lose to surrounding area pools by not being open?

I do not have much faith that the city will be able to build and maintain a multi-million-dollar recreation center based on the management of our existing facilities.

This is disappointing. I thought, "Pool Questions", finally some news about Japan's nuclear reactors. But guess not.

Why aren't we hearing news about the ongoing disaster? You know, things like: Japan Times: Unit 4 fuel pool continues to alarm scientists and gov’t officials around the world — ‘Intense criticism’ from some senior US officials http://enenews.com/japan-times-unit-4-fuel-pool-continues-to-alarm-scientists-and-govt-officials-around-the-world-intense-criticism-from-some-senior-us-officials

Or Tepco Official in Washington DC: We don’t know location of melted fuel from Fukushima reactors http://enenews.com/tepco-official-in-washington-dc-we-dont-know-location-of-fukushima-melted-fuel

Could it be here? Top Japan official: Very strong possibility there is nuclear fuel outside containment vessel http://enenews.com/top-japan-official-very-strong-possibility-nuclear-fuel-containment-vessel-reactors-video

Or even "alien" things like Senior Adviser: Mystery bacteria growing on nuclear fuel rods have unknown DNA sequence — “Right now we are trying to figure out what they’re using for food” http://enenews.com/senior-adviser-mystery-bacteria-growing-on-nuclear-fuel-rods-has-unknown-dna-sequence-right-now-we-are-trying-to-figure-out-what-these-bacteria-are-using-for-food

This is not world news tonight, it is an opinion page on a small town rag.

So small town rags should not report world news?
