25 years ago: Musicians, poets, artists gather for week-long event

September 8, 2012

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 8, 1987:

The River City Reunion had kicked off with a party at the Bottleneck, 737 New Hampshire, last night. Artists, writers, comics, poets, and musicians milled about while a film team from New York City, headed by former Lawrencian Mark Kaplan, collected video footage for a future documentary. Near the pool table, Allen Ginsberg said that there were two or three "generations" of artists represented at the get-together, several of whom had not been back to Lawrence for many years. The event was the starting point for a week of reading, performances, concerts, and films.

There are so many links for the 1987 River City Reunion that I couldn't pick just one. If you Google "River City Reunion Lawrence 1987" you will be presented with a good number of them. I'd love to hear comments from anyone who remembers this event!

I went to many of the events, and I even contributed money towards the printing of the official program-- I still have a couple of them around somewhere. I wish I still had a t-shirt, but wore it out years ago. Great artwork by S. Clay Wilson.

Lots of great poets, musicians and other performers, in venues all over town. For many of the Beats, I'm sure it was the last time they all got together. I've seen some of the footage Kaplan shot. Not sure if he ever finished the documentary. How about it, Kap?

I remember Edie Parker Kerouac telling stories of her Jack. William and Allen dancing on Massachusetts after their reading at Liberty Hall, holding some of the giant sunflowers Stan Herd had fastened to the parking meters. oh yeah. Great poets, Sonic Youth, Don Byrd,
