Douglas County prosecutors Tuesday charged an 18-year-old Lawrence man in connection with two July home burglaries.

Markcus Trey Sanders was charged with two counts of aggravated burglary, two counts of theft, one count of intimidating a witness, and one count of criminal use of a financial card stemming from home burglaries July 15 and 19 in Lawrence.

Sanders was arrested Saturday afternoon in the 4800 block of Bob Billings Parkway, said Lawrence police spokeswoman Kim Murphree.

In the July 15 incident, a suspect entered a home in the 3900 block of West 10th Place shortly before 5 a.m. Someone in the residence woke, and the suspect fled. Several items valued at nearly $3,000 were taken.

In the July 19 incident, a suspect entered a home in the 400 block of Vine Drive about 4:45 a.m. A woman in the residence woke to someone shining a flashlight at her. The suspect fled, but not before reportedly stealing several credit cards, which were later used by the suspect, according to police.

Sanders is being held at Douglas County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

Sanders is one of several suspects recently arrested after a rise in home burglaries between May and August. Police have warned Lawrence residents to take extra precautions, such as keeping lights on and locking screen doors. In late August, Sgt. Trent McKinley said police were investigating about 50 home burglaries that occurred during a three-month span.
