Eudora woman sentenced to eight years in prison for role in robbery at Lawrence motel

Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin sentenced a Eudora woman to eight years in prison for crimes connected with a March 5 robbery at the Days Inn, 730 Iowa.

Melanie Spanky Faye Brooks, 24, pleaded no contest to six charges, including drug possession, aggravated robbery and criminal threat as part of a plea bargain deal, in which several other charges against Brooks were dropped. Brooks’ attorney had petitioned Martin to depart from sentencing guidelines and order probation. However, Martin denied that request, citing reports that Brooks continued to use drugs while awaiting sentencing.

According to police reports, Brooks participated in the robbery of $1,500 and other items from a 32-year-old Lawrence man on March 5. The victim reported that several people participated in the robbery after they had been socializing at the Days Inn.

In August, Aaron Jacob Coates, a co-defendant in the case, received a 44-month sentence for his role in the crime.
