25 years ago: Interest still compounding on overdue taxes

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 1, 1987:

  • The collectors of Lawrence meteorological statistics had this to say about the month just ended: August was both hot and cold. The mercury had climbed over 100 degrees during the first three days of the month, but frequent storms had broken the heat wave and two cold-temperature records had been broken on the 24th and 27th when the days had struggled to climb out of the 60s.
  • The Douglas County Treasurer’s Office had collected nearly $99,000 in late 1986 taxes since a list of delinquent taxpayers had been published last month. A list of about 1,000 parcels and special assessments had run three times in August. For those still owing, there was an 18 percent interest rate, compounded daily, and a $5 publication fee added to their bills.
