The cost of room and board at Kansas University will increase about 2.54 percent next fall under a proposal before the Kansas Board of Regents.

The proposed rate for a traditional residence hall double room will increase to $3,902, while the cost for the Crimson Flex dining plan will increase to $3,540. That would total $7,442, which is $184 more than the current cost per academic year.

Also starting in fall 2013, each resident would pay student housing $260 for Internet data service instead of paying the Internet provider.

Diana Robertson, director of student housing, said the increases are needed to cover increased operating expenses and continue to make improvements and upgrades.

She said that even with the increases, KU housing and dining rates would remain below Big 12 and national averages. About 5,000 students live in KU housing.

KU’s request and those of the five other regents universities will be brought to the board during its monthly meeting Nov. 14 and 15.
