40 years ago: Hallmark Cards marks 15 years in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 29, 1972:

  • Yesterday had marked the 15th anniversary of the start of the current Hallmark Cards operation in Lawrence. A modest beginning in 1957 had led to a move to the plant near the Kansas Turnpike West interchange in 1958. Expansions had followed in 1961, 1965 and 1967, and the plant which had first had 100,000 square feet and 200 employees now boasted 475,000 square feet and a payroll near 1,000.
  • The Bureau of Indian Affairs this week had been authorized to use part of a $5.7 million appropriation for Haskell Indian Junior College. The Haskell Board of Regents had received authorization to proceed with planning and construction of a materials center and dining hall at the school.
